Zhangjiajie (张家界) is home to one of China's most spectacular natural landscapes - thousands of quartz sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains in the movie Avatar. This UNESCO-listed Wulingyuan scenery is unlike anywhere else on Earth.

🏔️ Avatar Inspiration: The floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar were inspired by Zhangjiajie's UNESCO-listed Wulingyuan scenery. The "Pillar of the Avatar" in Yuanjiajie is now a famous landmark. Come early morning for the best mist effects.
Zhangjiajie has three main areas:
The heart of Wulingyuan - 243 square km of stunning sandstone pillar landscapes. This is where you'll find the famous Avatar Hallelujah Mountains.
The most iconic area - features the "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" viewpoint. Take the Bailong Elevator up for spectacular views. The First Bridge of the World is here - a natural arch between two peaks.

Located near Zhangjiajie city - famous for the massive hole (天门 - "Heaven's Gate") carved through the mountain. The most accessible of Zhangjiajie's attractions.
The iconic 131.5m tall hole in the mountain - a natural arch that looks like a doorway to heaven. Accessed via the world's longest cable car (7km).

430m long, 300m above the canyon floor - the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge held the record for world's longest glass bottom bridge. The views are terrifyingly beautiful.

Various trails around Tianzi Mountain. Some stairs but manageable. Expect 4-6 hours of hiking. Good fitness required but no special skills.

Full traverse connecting both mountains. Thousands of stairs, steep sections. 8-10 hours. Only for experienced hikers in good shape.

Zhangjiajie cuisine reflects its Hunan heritage - bold, spicy, and flavorful. Here are the must-try dishes:
Zhangjiajie's signature dish - a spicy hot pot with three main ingredients (usually pork, Tofu, and vegetables). Rich, warming, and perfect after a day on the mountain.

🌫️ Best Time for Mist: Early morning (6-9 AM) when mist fills the valleys between the pillars. This is when you get the "Avatar" atmosphere. Bring a rain jacket even on clear days - mist can appear suddenly.

🏨 Where to Stay: Wulingyuan (near park entrance) is most convenient. Zhangjiajie city has more hotel options and better food. Most visitors choose Wulingyuan for early park access.
📅 Book Tickets: Park tickets and Tianmen Mountain tickets often sell out during Chinese holidays. Book online 2-3 days in advance. The Bailong Elevator and cable cars can have 1-2 hour queues - go early.
⚠️ Fitness Warning: Zhangjiajie involves A LOT of stairs. The famous "10,000 Steps" at Tianzi Mountain is literal. If you have knee problems or fear of heights, consider the elevator/cable car options - they cost extra but save energy.
