Top Attractions in Kunming
翠湖公园 — Green Lake Park (Cuihu Gongyuan)
Right in the city center, Green Lake is Kunming's living room. Locals practice tai chi, dance, play mahjong, and feed the swans. In winter (November-March), spectacular black-headed gulls migrate here — you can buy bread to feed them right out of your hand! The surrounding streets have great coffee shops and the famous Yunnan University area nearby.

The southern lake area has a pleasant walkway and the Dragon Gate (龙门) scenic area on the west side offers hiking with panoramic views. The Haigeng Dam area is popular for sunset walks. Note: swimming is not recommended due to water quality issues.

Even if you're not buying, it's an incredible sensory experience — mountains of roses, lilies, and orchids at impossibly cheap prices. Open daily.

Since 2021, the Kunming-Laos railway has made it possible to travel from Kunming to Mengla (on the Laos border) in just 3 hours, and through to Vientiane in a single day! This is one of the most exciting developments in Yunnan tourism.

Getting There
By Air — Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG)
Kunming Changshui is one of China's largest airports and a major hub for southwest travel. Direct flights connect to most major Chinese cities, plus international routes to Southeast Asia (Bangkok, Singapore, Vientiane, Luang Prabang). The airport is about 25km from downtown — take Metro Line 6 (35 min, ~5 yuan) or a taxi (40-60 min, ~100-150 yuan).

By Train
Kunming is connected by high-speed rail to Guiyang (2 hours), Nanning (4.5 hours), and Changsha (4 hours). The Kunming Railway Station (near the city center) and Kunming South Station (Kunmingnan) serve different routes. Book via 12306.cn or at the station.
